Hello!

Welcome to Call of the Couve. I'm filling this blog with stories about my new hometown. That would be Vancouver, Washington. Home base, with a bunch of travel as well throughout the year, to places I love around the world. I'll be writing about that as well.

Hood River Valley's Classic Strawberry

Hood River Valley's Classic Strawberry

It's a cross between Puget Beauty and Northwest with a three-week growing season. The Hood Strawberry is prized for its deep red color and intense sweetness and must be sold within one day of being picked, or it turns to mush.

While strolling through the  Vancouver Farmers Market today, I found them at the Parsons Farms stand. There weren't many left and the market had only been open for an hour. "Wow these look beautiful" I remarked and a shopper standing next to me answered, "This is the classic Oregon strawberry. They grow them bigger and sturdier in California but the Hood is sweeter and redder than any strawberry grown anywhere."

I bought a pint and devoured them immediately. Next Saturday I'm going back for enough to bake into a pie. Must find rhubarb as well.
